Spiritual Nutrition: Six Foundations for Spiritual Life and the Awakening of Kundalini

Gabriel Cousens, M.D.

High-phosphorous, high-lecithin, vegetarian foods include soybeans and bee pollen, which has 15-20 percent lecithin. According to the scientific literature, the actual process of thinking burns up phosphorous, so those who are doing a lot of thinking or meditating need a much higher phosphorous input. Phosphorous seems to be used in study, memorizing, reading, intellectual functioning, visualizing, and comprehension. With each thought we think, we use up phosphorous.
In general, bee pollen is healing, expanding to the nervous system, and has been associated as the food of longevity and "food of the gods" for thousands of years. Potassium Potassium is the "well-being" mineral. It is involved in secretions, brain performance, cell function, alkalinizing the blood, cell membrane conduction, hair growth, skin activity, fibrin blood-clotting function, muscle coordination, heat resistance, memorization, and the electricity in the body. Potassium is important for normal heart functions, particularly the nerve activity or the rhythm of the heart.
Other good sulfur sources include artichokes, asparagus, avocados, bee pollen, black currants, Brazil nuts, broccoli, carrots, celery, chervil, chicory, chili peppers, corn, cucumber, dill, durian, figs, filberts, garlic, hemp seeds, kohlrabi, lettuce, lima beans, mustard greens, mustard, oats, okra, onion, parsnips, peas, potatoes, pumpkin seeds, radishes, soybeans, spinach, thyme, tomatoes, turnips, and turnip greens. Foods high in sulfanolipids include spir-ulina, chlorella, and aphanizomenon flos aguae (AFA). Sulfur in food is lost with dehydration and heat.
Many of these high ojas- and vata-calming foods include: bee pollen; live foods high in oil content such as avocados or soaked nuts and seeds; sprouted or soaked grains; slightly warm blended greens; raw soups; and blended vegetables. All should be at least room temperature. Herbs that add a certain amount of heat to the system are helpful for balancing vata. These herbs include: ginger; sweet spices such as cardamom, fennel, and cinnamon; asafoetida (hing); and cumin. The idea here is that these herbs tend to minimize gas and bloating, are slightly heating, and specifically balancing for vata.
Goji berries and bee pollen are not only high in antioxidants, but are tremendously rejuvenative. More oily, creamy, soupy types of food, such as smoothies, are all good for building ojas. To build ojas, it is important to increase the intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. Many people on a low-fat, cleansing, live-food diet become depleted in Omega-3 fatty acids. Lack of short-, medium-, and long-chain fatty acids weakens the physical nervous system and depletes ojas. Purslane, a common herb that grows almost everywhere, is high in the long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA.
Certain live foods, however, like bee pollen, spirulina, and coconut, are exceptional for building ojas. The idea for optimal energetic balance is to add the high-ojas superfoods to your typical live-food diet, so the live-food diet strongly builds the ojas and prana. This unique perspective gives us an insight from Ayurveda into why the ancient great spiritual masters known as the Rishis, as well as Taoist masters, tended to eat not only vegan, but live food, with an emphasis on wildcrafted foods and high-soma herbs and foods.

Besides lending color to fruits and flowers, flavonoids are responsible for many of the medicinal properties of foods, juices, herbs, and bee pollen. Flavonoids are sometimes called "nature's biological response modifiers" because of their anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antiviral, and anticancer properties. Flavonoids are sometimes considered "semi-essential" nutrients, but in our view they are as important to human nutrition as the so-called essential nutrients.

So to the vitamins I was taking I added bee pollen, which I'd been reading about. My urologist had been suggesting a prostate gland removal but after a pyelogram x-ray, he told me that I had improved. He said there was still some enlargement of the prostate but not enough to cause any distress. I believe that adding bee pollen to my other vitamins and changing to a more nutritious diet helped my prostate to start returning to normal. I still eat bee pollen. I am 70 years of age and walk at least three miles out in the air every day." Miraculous Relief Of Prostate! Mr. A.C.

When I came back to Washington, BerHey brought in this little ninety-year-old guy with an even older friend who proceeded to tell me that if I would take bee pollen—I forget how much I took but it's on a piece of paper on my desk over there—if I take this bee pollen and a glass of water, my allergies would get better. If I took it, and ten minutes later nothing happened, then I should have another glass of water and another hit of bee pollen. I can't remember how many times I did it, but it's on a piece of paper on my desk.

Watercress leaves, sesame seeds, and bee pollen are libido enhancers. Add some to your meals every day. Food to Avoid Avoid foods that are high in saturated, hydrogenated, or partially hydrogenated fats, including red meat, butter, margarine, shortening, and refined vegetable oils. A high-fat diet causes circulatory problems and blocks the flow of blood to the genitals. Eliminate junk and processed foods from your diet. Not only are they generally fatty and lacking in nutrition, they contain chemicals that might affect sexual performance. Don't eat large meals just before sex.

If you know you are allergic to honey, bee pollen, or conifer and poplar trees, do not use bee products. Allergic reactions can range from very mild, such as mild gastrointestinal upset, to more severe reactions, including asthma, anaphylaxis (shock), intestinal bleeding, and even death in people who are extremely allergic to bee products. Honey contains small amounts of oxalates. Individuals with a history of calcium oxalate-containing kidney stones should limit their consumption of this food. See page 787 for more information.
The following sections address the complete health benefits of honey in its raw form and of bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly. Antioxidant Effects Honey, particularly darker honey, such as buckwheat honey, is a rich source of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, that exert significant antioxidant activity. A recent human trial showed that daily consumption of honey actually improves blood antioxidant levels and helps prevent lipid peroxidation.
Bee pollen is comprised of tiny, golden yellow to dark brown granules that have a delicate flavor and aroma that varies according to the plant pollen it was made from and is used as a nutritive tonic as well as to desensitize seasonal allergies. • Propolis is the resinous substance collected by bees from the leaf buds and barks of trees, especially poplar and conifer trees. The bees utilize the propolis along with beeswax to construct the hive. Propolis has antibiotic activities that help the hive block out viruses, bacteria, and other organisms.
The worker bees mix honey and bee pollen with enzymes in the glands of their throats to produce royal jelly. Royal jelly is believed to be a useful nutritional supplement because of the queen bee's superior size, strength, stamina, and longevity compared to other bees. It is used as a nutritive tonic. HISTORY Referred to in ancient Sumerian, Vedic, Egyptian, and biblical writings, honey has been employed since ancient times for both nutrition and healing medicine.

Therefore amino acid rich seeds (hemp, flax, pumpkin) and superfoods (spirulina, bee pollen, propolis) become more important in the diet with age. Of special note, the two raw foods known to have superior longevity properties are royal jelly and wolfberries or goji berries. These should be eaten daily as part of a youthening program. Eating For Detoxification By eating a diet of 100% raw plant foods, you will automatically begin to detoxify and heal poor health and disease conditions. To accelerate detoxification and healing, we remove fat from the diet.
All 8 essential amino acids are packaged in abundance in raw plant foods, especially in green leaves and superfoods (spirulina, blue-green algae, bee pollen, maca, goji berries, wolfberries and hempseeds). Raw plant fats are "fatty." They are heavy and of course help with weight gain. They will put just the right amount of fat on your body to give you excellent proportions and a good shape. They also add weight indirectly by providing fuel for working the muscles to build muscle mass. However, eating more fats alone will not cause weight gain, greens must be added.
Plant protein (superfoods) such as hemp protein, goji berries, algae, bee pollen, etc. may be eaten with light green vegetables such as lettuce and celery. They also may combine well with oils and sweet fruits in smoothies. This works as long as they do not produce gas/flatulence. The fiber-bound plant proteins, such as sprouted grain and sprouted legumes, should be eaten with alkaline green vegetables to balance out their acids. These fiber-bound plant proteins typically do not mix well with fats/oils or sweet fruits.
A better, safer idea would be to fast short periods on fresh vegetable juice (containing lemon), plenty of high-quality water and superfoods (spirulina, bee pollen, powdered grasses, blue-green algae, etc.) so that enough minerals are present to help escort toxins out of the body.

Today bee pollen is gaining increasing popularity as effective protection against many of the common pollutants in the environment, including carbon monoxide, lead, and mercury. bee pollen is used to treat allergies, since it desensitizes the individual. There have also been studies showing that bee pollen strengthens the resistance of the immune system to both cancer and radiation. This is one particular product that may become more popular because of its high protein content and other nutritional benefits.

For instance, the B vitamins may be found in deep-green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, bee pollen, royal jelly, spirulina and fermented plants. Vitamin B12 was addressed in Lesson 16: Wild Food. Vitamin C is found in many fruits, especially citrus fruits and peppers of all kinds. The best source of vitamin E is the avocado, olives, and mechanically separated raw rice bran. This lesson is about minerals, because it has been my experience, in studying nutrition, that minerals are far more important than vitamins. Colloids are the mineral building blocks of the body.

Bee pollen also provides B vitamins, vitamin C, carotenes, minerals, DNA and RNA, numerous flavonoid molecules, and plant hormones. Propolis and royal jelly have similar nutritional qualities as pollen but have considerably higher levels of different biologically active compounds. A S'/i-ounce (100 gram) serving provides 313 calories, 25 grams of carbohydrate, 25 grams of protein, and 12.5 grams of fat.
